This tenacious flower the ancients called “a blossom from heaven”, hibiscus syriacus, blooms in the morning, wilts in the afternoon, and the next day new buds take their place. Bloom after bloom, mugunghwa means “eternal blossom that never fades” and was a symbol for independence during the 20th century Japanese colonial occupation. The Mugunghwa Knot wears like armor and honors the fight for individual and collective sovereignty.
